The Mario Brutus Cup: A Window into Haitian Soccer

Women’s foutbòl (soccer) teams are gaining an increasingly prominent place in Haitian sports, and the level of competition continues to rise. Melchie Dumornay, named the French league’s best player in 2026, was not on the field, but her influence on Haitian women players was unmistakable.

The Mario Brutus Cup also brings together men’s teams. In late September, Delmas 60 FC faced Juvenat FC in the final, with Juvenat FC claiming a 1–0 victory.

Forum Theatre Sparks Debate in Delmas 31

Photo: Jean Elie Fortuné / Dèyè Mòn Enfo

On September 28, a forum theatre performance at the CRC in Delmas 31 prompted an ongoing response from the audience. The performance told the tragic story of a mother who was fwilling to sell her teenage daughter to a wealthy boss.

This form of participatory theatre often sparks debate among audience members, who can step onto the stage, replace a character, and change the course of the story.

“In forum theatre, the actors don’t offer solutions. They simply present observations that are often disturbing,” Mr. Pascal, one of the organizers, explained to HAITI WEEKLY. During the play, a police officer from the audience was added to the story to arrest the abusive boss. Some actresses were also replaced by audience members, prompting extensive debate about moral and legal issues.

Kay Fanm Mobilizes for Reproductive Health

Around September 28, our partner, Kay Fanm, organized activities to commemorate International Safe Abortion Day. The program included a screening of Que Sea Ley, a film about the struggle for abortion rights in Argentina, at the Pyepoudre cultural center, as well as a day-long mobile clinic with Profamil. The clinic provided free medication, gynecological and obstetric care, contraceptive services, and screenings for cervical and breast cancer.

Music Video of the Week

Boule sa - Wilnyyy

Young singer Wilny César got her start on social media with R&B songs. For her two latest releases, she has turned to dancehall. One of them, Boule sa (“Burn It,” pronounced “boo-lay sah”), has a music video.

The infectious riddim quickly catches the ear, blending the log drum sound popularized in South African house music with dancehall influences. The lyrics encourage listeners to dance as the singer proclaims that she will tear it up wherever she goes, “from Haiti to Palestine.”

Zanmitay Welcomes the Back-to-School Season at Havana Guitar

Once again this year, Zanmitay marked the start of the school year at Havana Guitar in Pétion-Ville on August 28. With the theme “Evazyon” (“Escape”), the event provided an opportunity for people to come together after their summer break.

One of the organizers told us that it is “a musical journey to prepare the body and mind for the return to everyday routines”. The event featured a blend of acoustic guitar, percussion, and singing.

Training and Women’s Leadership at Danthor Academy-Culturelle

Photo: Jean Elie Fortuné / Dèyè Mòn Enfo

Over the past few weeks, the Danthor Academy-Culturelle has organized a series of discussions and training sessions on cultural event management and women’s leadership. The sessions have brought bringing together around fifteen participants. Among other goals, the sessions aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of project development.

“It was a time rich in exchanges, learning, and reflection,” says Danthor Academy-Culturelle. We attended the August 29 session at the Michèle Tardieu library.

In Cité-Soleil, Chartered Buses Take Residents to Register to Vote

Photo: Dèyè Mòn Enfo

Political groups in Cité-Soleil, who are associated with armed groups, charter at least one bus almost every day to take residents outside the municipality to the SONAPI industrial zone to register to vote. According to our correspondents on the ground, passengers are brought back only after handing over their voting cards.

Meanwhile, a demonstration calling for prompt elections also took place in Brooklyn last Saturday. This comes just days after a United Nations report mentioned the appointment of Ti-Gabriel, a well-known armed group leader, to an official position in Cité-Soleil’s municipal administration.
